Re: I am here!

Hey Drac,

I was just wondering if yourself or Gracie Barra as a whole as considered releasing a curriculum instructional DVD Series.  Very similar to Gracie Combatives, Bullyproof & Master Cycle but for Gracie Barra.  Not just a small curriculum dvd but a very in depth instructional very similar to the quality of the Gracie Academy ones that have been recently released.  I'm very into instructionals myself so I had to ask.  It is fun to me to compare 1 school's curriculum to another.  Thanks for reading & I look forward to your reply.

I have seen that before, not the instructional itself but I saw that this was released.  The difference that I'm looking at is the fact that Gracie Combatives is 12 DVD's & each DVD is about 1 1/2 hours long in instruction.  The 13th DVD is the belt qualification test & that is why I didn't mention it.  Not only do they show the move from different angles & give some explanations of how you know if you are doing it right but they also teach you other tools such as:

Each move is taught in Technical Slices
Reflex Development
Fight Simulation
Mindset Minute

Have you seen the Gracie Combatives DVD Series?  Not so much the whole series but just some of the lessons?  And have you seen the Gracie Barra Fundamentals DVD?  If you have, would you highly recommend the Gracie Barra DVD?  If you do, then I will trust your opinion & purchase it but I wanted to hear someone's opinion on it.  I saw that it was only 4 DVD's & Gracie Combatives is 12 DVD's & I was afraid that maybe the instruction on the DVD wasn't as good as it could have been so they could fit the whole curriculum on the DVD?  If you can please clear that up & give me your opinion on it, that would be great.  Thanks for reading.

Re: I am here!

hello kevin,
i am just a newbie in bjj, but i would like to share my opinion about your questions; following your posts it is clear that you are more interested in the self defense application of bjj, which i am also. in my oppinion there is no need to buy the combatives dvd; why ?  the gracie barra mehthod gives you a solid base for streetdefense, you will cover everything; strikes, throws, ground, self defense, etc ...
when you have a solid base, from time to time in your gym, you can train street scenarios like all out sparring against stick or knive and sparring against mulitiple oppenonts.  you will discover your personnality and adapt your strategy. because in mma sparring there are no lies.
strategy is in my opinion the most important.  for streetassault, just stay away out of his range§bjj strategy), if he attacks , close the distance and clinch him§bjj strategy); for many, stay on your feet and adapt, although it is difficult against many. but in my opinion it is more important to first start to survive and win against one... this is already difficult enough.
for myself i selected also a basic boxing combo starting from a natural stance; which i can use pre emptive.
that was just my opinion, find just a good gym, with a good instructor, and train, train, train, and train. there is no secret, just hard work.
kind regards
amando

Re: I am here!

I was wondering, do you happen to know who the first ever female black belt was, and when she received her rank?

From looking around the net, a lot of people have said Leka Vieira, but that was in the '90s: I would have thought there was at least one female black belt before that time, as the first BJJ academy opened around 1925 (unless there was more prejudice against women training in BJJ back then or something?).

Hey Drac,

What is your opinion of the 50/50 guard?

Re: I am here!

this week i received the book by post 'mastering jiujitsu' , written by renzo gracie; few techniques are taught, but in my opinion it is one of the best books i've seen about bjj; it is a solid base for sport, mma and self defense. the book gives a real no nonsense approach towards hand to hand combat.
does anyone can recommand me also other books ? any requests are welcome ...

Re: I am here!

You guys should start new threads if you want an answer...

That said, I personally like Saulo's Jiu Jitsu University as a reference book.

yes...Start a thread with the name of the guy you want to ask, and a brief question in thread title. You can explain in details to your question in the actual post.

Saulo demonstrates high percentage techniques in an easy to digest way.  Another vote for him.
