Topic: luta livre

recently i saw a report about the brazilian martial art luva livre.  it seemed to be similar to bjj; it has a grappling competition and also a vale tudo training method.  luta livre comes from catch wrestling , that's why i think it has some very practical take downs.  although it is an effective combat system , it doens't score well in competitions like adcc, ufc, etc...
i think it is because it is not so good structured as bjj is; there is less marketing so is not so popular.
one of the few luta livre fighters are johil de oliveira, who was popular in the vale tudo brazil, and today there is pequeno nogeuira.
i would like to know what you guys , and especially draculino thinks about this martial art which long time ago was a rival of bjj

I asked my Brasilian instructor about Luta Livre and he thought it was just about vale tudo.

Armando,
Yes they were big time rival of us. They were tough guys who practiced BJJ only without the Gi.
Most of their guys were poor guys and they did not have the chance of having high quality training. Maybe that is why their sport never grew like BJJ did.
Also, the Gracies created a way more technical discipline. They were experts who never stopped study their art.
But, there are lots of good guys from Luta-Livre, such as Alexandre Pequeno Nogueira, Marcio Cromado, Alexandre Cacareco, Johil de Oliveira, Luciano Azevedo and more.
