Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship vs. Mundials

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

How do the Pan-Am’s relate to the Mundials?

The Mundials is a more prestigious tournament. It is only adults and juveniles; no kids, white belts or masters. It is the cream of the crop. There are more competitors at the Pan-Am’s and normally most of the best athletes compete in both, but the Mundials is definitely unique…

Draculino GB Student Credited with Stopping Assault

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Chris Reed at the office. File photo by Kim Christensen.by Thayer Evans [April 12, 2010] — Nassau Bay City Manager Chris Reed didn’t get the dishwasher he was shopping for over the weekend, but he helped police get their man in the Best Buy parking lot.

According to an affidavit he gave to League City police, Reed, a former police officer who also happens to be a professional mixed martial arts fighter, chased down a man he saw pushing a woman to the ground and punching her in the face.

League City Police Lt. John Jordan said Krisean Deon Wade, 19, is charged with family violence.

The incident took place Saturday in the parking lot of League City’s Best Buy at 2510 Gulf Freeway, where Reed been looking at dishwashers. Reed, 41, gave the following account of what happened in his affidavit:

Reed had just left the store about 3:40 p.m. with his 16-year-old daughter and was getting into his car when he heard her say, “Get him daddy.” He looked behind his car and saw Wade, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound man about 15 yards away, throwing his 19-year-old girlfriend to the ground.

Reed told police that at first he thought the two were playing around but then he saw the man hit the young woman at least twice in the face with his fist. Reed said the punches were hard enough that he could hear the impact, and the woman was trying to escape her boyfriend’s grasp but he wouldn’t let go.

According to Reed, he yelled at the man and started to run towards him. At first, Reed said, the man took an aggressive stance, but as Reed — who’s 5-foot-10 and 210 pounds — neared, he took off across the parking lot. Reed gave chase and pushed him to the ground, where he held him with a knee in the man’s belly and arm raised as a threat until police arrived.

The officer recognized Reed — who used to be an assistant police chief for League City — and told him to step away. Reed said he did so after telling Wade to remain where he was, and the suspect was arrested without incident.

“It was instinctive to act,” Reed wrote in a text-message. “I didn’t even think about him potentially having a weapon until afterwards. I did get a little nervous when the officer got out with a Taser. I was glad he recognized me.”

League City Police Chief Mike Jez said he is appreciative of Reed’s assistance. Reed was League City’s assistant police chief before becoming League City’s city administrator, a job he quit in June. Reed was hired to his current position in Nassau Bay in July.

In 1993, Reed was shot in the chest while chasing suspected drug dealers in a wooded area on the city’s south side. It struck him in his protective vest, leaving him with a bruised heart and lung.

“I wouldn’t have expected anything less out of Chris Reed,” Jez said.

Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship – Training & Preparation

Friday, April 9th, 2010

In the weeks leading up to the Pan-Am’s does training change, or is it more about just getting a mental game plan?

I believe that you have to maintain a certain consistency on training all year long. Closer to the tournament, it is a matter of being really aware of your game plan and strategy that you gonna do there. Also, it is important to train only on the time of your division, and train for more rounds than you think that you will have there. Of course the mental game is probably the crown of your training and absolutely a main aspect of it.

Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship – A Brief Intro

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

The Pan-Am’s is the largest BJJ event in the world; in number of athletes and in days of competition. It was the first non Brazilian, international BJJ competition in history. Back in 1995, when the IBJJF held its first event in Irvine, CA, I was honored to compete and win the Black Belt light weight division. Master Carlos Gracie Jr. is really a visionary and had the exact idea of the potential of our sport.

From 1995, the competition evolved so much and it is always a great place to check out what is latest on the new techniques.

The Story Behind the Picture

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I was recently asked about the photo above of myself, Rafael Sapo and Wanderlei Silva.

The event was called MTF. It was the Brazilian fight league, in the format of the extinct IFL. There were 4 teams. One of the captains was Wanderlei, the other Murilo Bustamante. Then there was Rogerio Nogueira and finally Pedro Rizzo. Each captain could choose 2 fighters for his own team, the other 3 were chosen by the organization (they used the best MMA fighters in Brazil at the time).

I had two students in the event. One was Rafael Sapo (in the picture side by side with Wanderlei) and the other Joaqim Ferreira Mamute (on Murilo Bustamente’s team). Both Sapo and Mamute won their bouts. Sapo beat Silmar Rodrigo via unanimous decision (185 lbs. division) and Mamute beat Andre Mussi and the UFC star Junior Dos Santos via submission in the first round. That was a great event for us.

Thoughts on UFC 111 – GSP vs. Hardy

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

After watching the UFC 111, I was really happy with the victory of my friend and teammate, Ricardo “Big Dog” Almeida. He put on a clinic, fighting a no mistake and perfect fight submitting the tough Matt Brown.

Rosimar Toquinho Palhares scored a fast submission against his opponent showing that he is, indeed, a threat to all the 185-ers in the UFC. With more experience, he might get to the top. Also we had Fabricio Camoes, from Royler Gracie, fighting BJJ Black Belt Kurt Pellegrino in a great fight in which Pellegrino got a submission.

Shane Carwin is a beast! What a great fighter! He was cornered by a friend of mine from Colorado, Amal Easton. Amal is a Black Belt under Renzo Gracie. He is Carwin’s BJJ coach. Great victory!

And finally, GSP dominated the 5 rounds against Dan Hardy. GSP prepared his BJJ in Renzo Gracie’s academy and showed lots of improvements in that area. He fought a great fight! However, Hardy deserves a lot of credit. I really did not care too much about him before that fight but the heart and the warrior spirit that he showed that night was unbelieveble. This cannot be taught. You have it or you don’t. And he has it! What a warrior!

It was a great night for BJJ. Lots of great moments and great fighters representing our art and putting on a show!

Seminars Update

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I will be going to Tennesee for the first time to teach a seminar at GB Knoxville, under professor Samuel Braga, my long time student. The event will be on April 17th. Then, on May 8th, I will be going to Brownsville to Gracie Barra RGV, under Professor Tyler Bossard. That will be basically one seminar a month!

The last seminars that I taught were for good causes. At GB The Woodlands, under professor Chad Robo, we had a fundraiser for GB Black Belt Alex Gotay, who was diagnosed with throat cancer. Then I taught a BJJ for MMA seminar at San Jacinto College. The funds were donated to the Remembering Barbara Baker organization, that treats adults and children with brain cancer. Jiu-Jitsu for a good cause!
