Competitive Plans

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I’m asked all the time about when, or if, I plan on competing again.  Of course I do, but this is a time in my life that I have many business changes and opportunities knocking at my door.  I would be selfish with my family and future to not look at them.

But for sure, I will compete more.  I am still a KID!!! I would like to do some MMA and maybe a Gi tournament… when the time is right.  I have been competing for almost 25 years.  Why stop now?

Goals

Friday, March 12th, 2010

I was recently asked about what goals I have for myself now that I’m at this level in Jiu-Jitsu. My role as a Martial Artist is to try my hardest to change people’s lives for the best. This is what makes me happy and satisfies me now. If in the process I make more world caliber champions, great. If not, I think I made my contribution.

I want to be sure and contribute and expose how beautiful, effective and life changing our art is.

Kombat Clinic

Interview by David Webb, 3rd March 2010

This week KombatClinic.com has had the pleasure of interviewing yet another legend from the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – Professor Vinicius Magalhães – a fourth degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. and the Gracie Barra Academy.

Professor Magalhães or “Draculino” as he is better known, is the head instructor of Gracie Barra Texas and the Gracie Barra Belo Horizonte Schools and amongst his students, you will find Mundial winners, Pan-Am champions, national BJJ champions, champion mixed martial artists and grapplers and a total of more than 78 BJJ Black Belts. Draculino began his martial arts training at the age of 7, where he began Judo.

Introduced to BJJ through a surfing friend he instantly fell in love with BJJ and is part of a very well-respected bunch of Jiu Jitsoka from the original Gracie Barra Academy counting the likes of Renzo, Ralph, Ryan, Rillion, Crolin and Carlos Gracie Jr. as well as other great BJJ athletes such as Helio Soneca and Roberto “Gordo” Correa as his contemporaries.

A runner-up at the very first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships in 1996, Draculino has the honour of being named as Royler Gracie’s toughest ever opponent – by Royler himself! Having trained under Jean-Jacques Machado until purple belt Draculino was awarded his black belt in BJJ by Carlos Gracie Jr. in 1995. Now based in Houston, TX. Draculino is now responsible for taking his very own team (Team Draculino Gracie Barra) to the world stage. It is a great honour to have Professor Magalhães on KombatClinic.com and I hope you enjoy our interview as much as I did.”

Seminars

Friday, March 5th, 2010

I was in Lubbock, Texas for the tenth time in ten years teaching at Pittman’s Martial Arts. It was a two day seminar and, as always, I had a great time. I’m in the process of scheduling my visit to the GB Corpus Christi, GB Beaumont, GB Rio Grande Valley, GB New Mexico, GB Poland, GB Holland, GB Greece and more…. tough schedule! As soon as I get back from Brazil, I will have the specific dates for everyone.

I was recently asked about my teaching strategy for the seminars that I do. My seminars are always related to a specific topic. That is the way that people learn best, and it allows them to remember the information forever. Instead of lots of different and random stuff, we dissect one topic. That is the best way and that is why I feel that people always want me back, because they learn.

MMA Training

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

MMA training is the hardest training that I know. It is almost impossible to cover all of the aspects needed in a fight: striking, takedowns, Jiu-Jitsu, stamina, strength, conditioning, mental game, etc.

Also, the fact that it is nearly impossible to fight 100% healthy, without any injuries. I think that training has to be really smart in a way that if it is too wild, you won’t fight due to injury. Trust me, it happened to me 3 times and I lost money, time, and more.

You have to be really protective and make sure that you understand your body and its limits. This is so individual and unique that you have to make sure that you don’t get confused between being tired and hurt, or being lazy!

Quick Thought on Drama in the BJJ Community

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Life is so tough and hard that we cannot afford to expend energy with all this crap about BJJ drama. I try hard not to get involved and I think that if people would put the same amount of energy into productive things instead of on drama, BJJ would be even more developed and technical.
