Seminars Update

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I will be going to Tennesee for the first time to teach a seminar at GB Knoxville, under professor Samuel Braga, my long time student. The event will be on April 17th. Then, on May 8th, I will be going to Brownsville to Gracie Barra RGV, under Professor Tyler Bossard. That will be basically one seminar a month!

The last seminars that I taught were for good causes. At GB The Woodlands, under professor Chad Robo, we had a fundraiser for GB Black Belt Alex Gotay, who was diagnosed with throat cancer. Then I taught a BJJ for MMA seminar at San Jacinto College. The funds were donated to the Remembering Barbara Baker organization, that treats adults and children with brain cancer. Jiu-Jitsu for a good cause!

“Is it just me?” Editorial by Kid Peligro

Below is an editorial that we felt compelled to share.  Enjoy.

“Is it just me?” Editorial by Kid Peligro

Is it just me or you also think there are too many unqualified “instructors” putting videos on the web? It wasn’t too long ago there were only a few available sources of instruction such as DVD’s etc and there weren’t enough instructors to satisfy the hunger for knowledge, so many were forced to look for any instruction on the web. Nowadays however, there is a large supply of instructional DVD, books and web videos by qualified instructors.

Now and then the internet served as a great source of information and instruction, as there are many on line classes with qualified or even great instructors. At the same time however the interenet serves as a source of misinformation. With the ease of access to sites like youtube, anyone qualified or not can post their techniques or worse pass for an “expert” confounding the new practitioners. While abundance of information is not bad, the fact is that some so called “experts” are doing nothing but hurting the art and the ones that follow them. Hurt the art because a poorly informed practitioner is someone that is not getting the full benefit of the art and worse proceeding down a path that maybe difficult to come back and correct many times leading them to quit or get hurt or hurt others.

While the international federation tries to set standards of quality for all, it is virtually impossible to monitor and advise everyone of every possible “false prophet” out in the vastness of the World Wide Web, so it is up to us, everyone really to monitor and alert as many people as possible about bad instruction.

It is up to us who love the art and do many sacrifices to learn from the best and be the best we can be to protect tha art that we love!

That is my opinion, what do you think?

Now go train Jiu-Jitsu,

Thoughts on UFC Live – Vera vs. Jones

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Great fights of the UFC last Sunday!  What can I say about Dos Santos and Jon Jones?  SCARY!!!  Young monsters ready to get to the top!  Remember that Dos Santos’s only loss was to my student Joaquim Ferreira Mamute in December 2007 via armbar in the first round :)   BJJ saves!

Legacy Fighting Championship in Houston

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

The results of the Legacy MMA were the best possible for GBTx and Gracie Barra in general. We had three fighters, and three winners; two by submission and one by decision. We also had another fighter from GB Woodlands that won as well, making it a perfect 4-0 for Gracie Barra on the night.

Greg Bellomy put on a show, getting the submission of the night with a sleeper anaconda choke. Brian Light Foot had a stand up, strategic fight and won by decision. Marcelo Azevedo put on a BJJ clinic. He submitted his opponent in the first round with a rear naked choke.

We showed that it is not just BJJ that the team is good at here in Texas… these guys can fight!

My Travels

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I’ve been all over the world and each place has its great aspects – all of them.  It is so hard to decide which would be my favorite if I had to choose… Europe is good all over!  What a continent full of history and nature! Beautiful!

Kuwait and Abu Dhabi are unique and so refined. The people there treat me so well and give me so many presents that I always come home with extra suitcases!

Japan is also crazy different and unique, but I love that food!!!!! There are really tough guys in the light weight there. Scary!

Australia is also wonderful. What nature! Great people also!

And of course there is America, my new home.  All over the US is great!  What a great country that I chose to live!

And to finish, my homeland, the birth place of our art, Brazil. With all the problems, I still think that my heart will always live there.

Visit to Brazil

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Brazil was great! Always great to be home! Lots of work to be done there and I was super busy but everything was awesome! I made the final adjustments on my five fighters and taught daily at my school, Gracie Barra BH. I can guarantee that, still, there is no place IN THE WORLD like this school to train Jiu- Jitsu. Almost twenty Black Belts of the highest level training and sharing information.

Romulo Barral was there getting ready for the Abu Dhabi pro Jiu-Jitsu and our very own Claudi Mattos, Caloquinha, just beat six opponents to win the Brazilian Qualifiers for the event. We will be well represented!

Brazil Fight MMA

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

The Brazil Fight MMA was the biggest MMA event in the last two years in Brazil!  Forty-five hundred people packed the arena and some of the best fighters in Brazil put on a show!  Gracie Barra/Fusion BH had five fighters.  Mauricio Faccao put on a show of technique and aggression and submitted his opponent, William Vianna, via guillotine in the second round.

Then Gustavo Coelho fought the toughest fight of the evening in a stand up war and lost in a split decision to Gabriel Bob Esponja.  After that, we had Edson Sururu Jorge dominating through three rounds against Fernando Paulon, from Brazilian Top Team, but two judges saw it differently and gave Fernando the majority draw!? The audience went nuts and a little riot started but thank GOD everything turned out ok.

The two last fights were two of my top students of all time (BJJ World Champions Erick Wanderley and Cristiano Titi) and they both submitted their opponents ( Johny Cyborg from RFT and American Wrestler Rico Washington from Minessota Fight Factory) in the first round, closing an outstanding night for GBBH.
